Make Scanned PDF Searchable — No File Upload
Vikone Private makes your scanned PDF searchable by adding an invisible text layer with on-device OCR — entirely in your browser. The only network request is a one-time ~16MB model download; your PDF itself is never uploaded to any server, and not a single byte of your file leaves your computer.

🔒 No upload · Runs entirely in your browser
Your scanned PDF becomes searchable on your own device — nothing uploaded
A scanned PDF is just a picture of a page — you cannot select, copy, or search the text in it. Vikone Private runs OCR locally in your browser to read those page images and embed an invisible text layer underneath, so the words become selectable and searchable while the page looks exactly the same. The only network request is a one-time ~16MB model download; your PDF itself is never uploaded. Want proof? Let the model download once, then disconnect from the internet — the recognition runs fully offline, because your file was never going anywhere.
How local OCR works here
On-device OCR, not a cloud service
The recognition model runs inside your browser with onnxruntime-web. Your PDF is opened, read, and rewritten in memory on your own machine. The model files (~16MB) download once on first use and are cached for offline use afterwards; your document itself is never sent anywhere.
An invisible text layer — the page looks identical
OCR adds a transparent text layer aligned with the words in the page image. The page looks exactly as it did before, but you — and any other PDF reader — can now select, copy, and search the text.
Pages that already have text are skipped
Vikone Private checks each page first. Pages that already contain a real text layer are left untouched, so a mixed PDF (some scanned, some digital) only gets OCR where it is actually needed. The summary tells you how many pages were recognized and how many were skipped.
Works offline after the first run
Because the model is cached, the second time you use the tool there is no download at all — you can go fully offline. Either way, your file never leaves your device.

Frequently asked questions
- Does this tool upload my PDF?
- No. Your PDF is opened and processed entirely in your browser and never leaves your device. The only network request is a one-time ~16MB download of the recognition model — that is code, not your file. Once it is cached, you can disconnect from the internet and the tool still works.
- How can I OCR a PDF without uploading it?
- Most online OCR tools — iLovePDF, Smallpdf, PDF24, Sejda, Soda PDF, PDF Candy — require you to upload your PDF to their servers before processing it. Vikone Private is different: recognition happens entirely in your browser, locally. Your file is never uploaded. Want to verify? Let the model download once, then disconnect from the internet — it still works.
- How is this different from the plain OCR tool?
- The plain OCR tool extracts the text as plain text for you to copy out. This tool keeps your file as a PDF and adds an invisible, searchable text layer on top of the original page images — so the document looks identical but its text becomes selectable and searchable.
- Will pages that already have text be re-processed?
- No. Pages that already contain a real text layer are detected and skipped, so only scanned pages get OCR. The completion summary shows how many pages were recognized and how many were skipped.
- Is it safe to use on confidential documents?
- Yes — processing locally is exactly the point. Your PDF is opened, recognized, and saved on your own device, with no upload step at all. Confidential contracts, records, and statements never touch a server.
Our privacy promise
A scanned document is often the most sensitive thing you own — an ID, a contract, a medical record. It should never sit on someone else's server just to become searchable. Vikone Private runs the OCR entirely in your browser: your PDF is never uploaded, no account, no server. The only thing that ever downloads is the recognition model (~16MB, once) — never your data, in any direction. Want proof? After the model is cached, disconnect from the internet and watch it keep working; in the Network panel (F12) your file never appears in any outbound request.
