Redact PDF without uploading — true redaction, not a black-box overlay.

Vikone Private truly deletes the content you mark from your PDF — removed from the file itself, not covered up — entirely in your browser. Your file is never uploaded to any server. From open to download, everything happens on your own device; not a single byte leaves your computer.

The marked content is truly deleted — locally, with nothing uploaded

Drawing a black rectangle over text in a PDF does not remove the text — it can still be selected, copied, or searched underneath. Vikone Private deletes the marked content from the file itself, then verifies the output through 3 safety gates before you can download it. Everything runs locally in your browser; your file is never uploaded to any server. Want proof? Disconnect from the internet before you start — the tool keeps working, because your file was never going anywhere.

How true redaction works here

Two modes: Standard and Maximum safety

In Standard mode, pages where your boxes cover only text get precise deletion — the marked words are removed from the file's content stream, and the rest of the page stays selectable and searchable. In Maximum-safety mode, every page with a box is flattened to an image, so nothing selectable remains on those pages. Pick Maximum safety for court filings or whenever in doubt.

Automatic per-page routing

Standard mode checks every page before touching it. If a box touches an image, vector graphics, or an annotation — or the page structure can't be fully verified — that page is automatically flattened to an image instead, and the reason is shown on the page badge and in the cleanup report. Precise deletion is only used where it is provably safe.

Three verification gates before download

The exported file is re-parsed from its actual bytes and checked three ways: text extraction over the redacted areas must come back empty, a full-text search for the removed values must find nothing, and a byte-level scan of the file's raw structures must show no leftovers. If any gate fails, the export is blocked and no file is produced.

A cleanup report with every export

Each export comes with a downloadable report: which route every page took, what was cleared across the document — metadata, form fields, annotations, embedded files, bookmarks — and the result of each verification gate. The report never contains the sensitive values themselves.

Optional: a searchable text version via local OCR

Flattened pages lose their selectable text. You can optionally run local OCR on the already-redacted page images to embed an invisible text layer that makes them searchable again. The result is forced through all 3 verification gates a second time, and a comparison report tells intentional removals apart from possible OCR misreads. The OCR model (~16 MB) downloads once and is cached; it only ever sees the already-redacted images.

How to redact a PDF

  1. Open your PDF with the tool above — drop it in or click to select. It is opened locally in your browser, not uploaded.
  2. Drag boxes over everything that must go — text, numbers, images.
  3. Pick a mode: Standard keeps unmarked text selectable; Maximum safety flattens every boxed page to an image.
  4. Click "Export safe PDF" — the marked content is deleted and the output must pass 3 verification gates, or the export is blocked.
  5. Download your redacted PDF together with its cleanup report.

Frequently asked questions

Does this tool upload my PDF?
No. The entire redaction happens in your browser. Your PDF never leaves your device. Want proof? Disconnect from the internet before you start — the tool keeps working, because your file was never going anywhere.
How can I redact a PDF without uploading it?
Most online tools — iLovePDF, Smallpdf, PDF24, Sejda, Soda PDF, PDF Candy — require you to upload your PDF to their servers before processing it. Vikone Private is different: redaction happens entirely in your browser, locally. Your file is never uploaded. Want to verify? Disconnect from the internet first — it still works.
Can the text under the black boxes be copied or recovered?
No. Unlike tools that merely draw a shape on top, Vikone Private removes the marked content from the file itself, and the output is rebuilt from scratch — no leftover revision history to dig through. Three verification gates (text extraction, full-text search, byte-level scan) confirm the content is gone before the file is offered for download. On flattened pages, only pixels remain.
Why did some of my pages turn into images?
In Standard mode, precise deletion is used only where it is provably safe. If a box touches an image, vector graphics, or an annotation — or the page structure can't be fully verified — that page is flattened to an image so nothing can survive underneath. The reason is shown on the page badge and in the cleanup report. You can make those pages searchable again with the optional local OCR text version.
What does it mean if verification fails?
It means the output did not pass one of the 3 safety gates, so the export was blocked and no file was produced — the tool refuses to hand you a file it cannot verify. Your original file is untouched (it never is modified). Adjust your boxes and try again; if it keeps failing, do not share the output of this tool.
Is it safe to use on confidential documents?
Redaction exists precisely because a document is sensitive — and uploading the unredacted original to a cloud service defeats the purpose. Vikone Private has no upload step at all: the file is opened, redacted, verified, and saved on your own device. Every export must pass 3 verification gates before download.

Our privacy promise

Your unredacted original is the most sensitive version of your document — it should never sit on someone else's server. Vikone Private processes your PDF entirely in your browser: no upload, no server, no account. From open to download, not a single byte of your file leaves your computer. Want proof? Disconnect from the internet before you start — the tool keeps working. You can also watch the Network panel (F12): your file never appears in any outbound request; the only download is the optional OCR model, which never carries your data anywhere.
